I have been reading through some of my old writing today and found this poem I wrote a few years ago whilst on holiday in the Gambia….
There were no street lights,
Along the sandy roads.
“don’t go out alone at night”
Is what we were told.
The darkest of environments,
In which I’ve ever been.
Only the whites of eyes,
Were all that I could see.
Intimidating noises,
Would echo through the dark.
Either locals try’na scare us,
Or wild dogs as they bark.
The night time in Gambia,
Can be a spooky place.
Tourists really don’t belong,
Outside the compound gates.
